The Spicy Ginger

We redheads have reputations for our fiery tempers and spicy personalities. Hmmmm. I suppose there may be a tiny bit of truth to those theories (haha). In that vein I wanted to create a “ginger” cocktail that was just a little spicy but also a little sweet. I love how this turned out but must fully disclose that it is not for a lightweight. (It is one potent cocktail.) I do however provide an option to mellow it if you love it but want to tone it down slightly.

RECIPE TUNES (because everything is always better with music)
Let Go by RACNaive by The Kooks • Percussion Gun by White Rabbits

INGREDIENTS

  • 6-9 Blackberries
  • A muddler to muddle your blackberries (pictured below). If you don’t have one get creative, you need to mash the berries at the bottom of your shaker to extract all of the delicious juices.
  • Bourbon of your choice. (2 1/2 shots per drink)
  • Domaine de Canton ginger liquor (2 shots per drink) or any similar ginger liquor of preference. See picture for reference below.
  • Ghost Pepper Vodka. (1/3 to 1/2 shot per drink. A little goes a long way.)
I LOVE and highly recommend Ascendant Ghost Chili Vodka if you can find it (as seen in photo below). It has zero flavor but lots of heat so just a little makes any drink spicy without altering the flavors in your cocktail. If you cannot find it ask around for a flavorless chili vodka that has great heat. If all else fails you can use hot peppers of your choice but they will add their own flavor into the mix.

Optional:

  • Club soda. You will only need a splash or two. This is to add some bubbles and to tone down the alcohol in your drink if you want to.

LETS MAKE SOME DRINKS!

  1. Place your blackberries into your shaker and muddle the blackberries to extract the juice.
  2. Add two jiggers/shot glasses of Domain De Canton or your alternative ginger liquor.
  3. Add two and a half jiggers/shot glasses of your bourbon of choice to the shaker.
  4. Add 1/4 jigger or just a few splashes of your ghost pepper vodka. (You can always add more so start small and add more after shaking and tasting if you want more heat.)
  5. Shake everything together very well.
NOTE: If you like drinking it martini-style/straight up as seen in photo at the top of this post then add ice to your shaker before shaking it so your drink gets nice and cold. If you prefer it on the rocks then shake it without ice, strain it and pour it over ice into an old fashioned glass as seen in pic below. This second option will also help mellow the drink slightly if you love it but find it a little strong.
  6. Strain your drink into your glass, stir it if on the rocks. Taste and alter it accordingly to your liking. If it’s too sweet you can add more bourbon. If not spicy enough add a splash more of your ghost pepper vodka. If you prefer a less potent cocktail add some club soda or more ice or simply allow your ice to melt for a few minutes before stirring and sipping.
  7. Garnish with a fresh blackberry or simply enjoy as is.

CHEERS!
